Winter readiness means more than owning a cart. A small operator needs known equipment, accepted fluid, available power, a workable ramp, trained people, and current instructions.

When should this check happen?
Do a full review before the first freeze or when equipment comes back from long storage. Check again after repairs, a fluid change, or any other change that could affect the setup.
What should you check on the equipment?
Confirm the model and find its current manual. Then look over the frame, tank, wheels, controls, pump, hoses, fittings, reel, nozzle, power system, and any heater or engine on the unit.
Look for leaks, wear, loose parts, damaged cords or hoses, unreadable labels, and anything that changed during storage. If something looks wrong, deal with it before the first winter event.

Does the equipment work as expected?
A clean-looking cart may still have a weak battery, fuel problem, leak, restricted nozzle, damaged hose, loose fitting, or heater fault. Follow the cart manual and test it before the first storm, in a suitable area with a plan for anything discharged.
Write down any problem you find and make sure it is resolved before the cart is counted as ready.

Are heat and power ready at the real location?
Test power or fuel where the equipment will actually operate, not only at a convenient shop outlet. Confirm cords, charging, fuel, ventilation, exhaust clearance, and cold-start planning for that spot.
If you need heated fluid, plan warm-up time with a realistic tank load and outdoor conditions. A heater that works in the shop may not keep up on a busy cold morning.

Is the fluid known, protected, and usable?
List the exact product, whether it is ready-to-use or concentrate, how much you have, and where it is stored. Do not rely on color alone to identify fluid.
Check containers for broken seals, leaks, damage, water, dirt, or unreadable labels. Keep questionable material separate and ask the supplier before using it.
Ready-to-use fluid and concentrate are not interchangeable. Follow the product instructions and never guess at a mixing ratio.

Is the ramp and storage plan workable?
Walk the route from storage to the aircraft. Check doors, gates, turns, ramp grade, snow, ice, visibility, lighting, traffic, drainage, containment, equipment position, and hose routing.
Make sure the cart and hose can reach the work area without forcing someone into an awkward position. Do not use a loose ladder, makeshift platform, or improvised extension to hide a reach problem.
Choose a storage spot that protects the equipment and fluid while keeping them accessible. Make sure the cart cannot roll, tip, leak, block an exit, or be struck.
Are the people and documents ready?
Decide who will check the cart, confirm the fluid, operate the equipment, communicate with the flight crew, and report problems. Make sure each person knows their role before the weather turns.
Keep the current aircraft, fluid, and equipment information where the team can find it. Replace old printouts and saved files when the information changes.
What is the beginner preseason checklist?
- Owner: Name the person leading winter preparation and a backup.
