How to Choose Aircraft Deicing Equipment: A Beginner's Guide

Start with the aircraft, workload, fluid, power, reach, crew, and site—not the tank size.

Purpose-built equipment can replace make-do winter preparation, but the operating facts still determine fit.

What should you decide before looking at a cart?

Choosing aircraft deicing equipment starts with your operation, not a tank size or cart model.

Define the job in one sentence. For example: “We need to support two turboprops at one base and be ready before the first morning departure.”

That sentence is more useful than “We need a 60-gallon cart.” It gives ADI a real starting point and exposes missing information early.

This guide helps you prepare for an equipment conversation. Use the manuals for your aircraft, fluid, and equipment for the actual operating steps.

Which aircraft must the equipment support?

List every aircraft make and model you expect to serve. A single based piston aircraft creates a different problem than changing traffic that includes turboprops and business jets.

For each aircraft, note its height and shape, where the cart and operator can stand, sensitive areas, and which fluids you expect to use.

Measure the real work area. A photograph or advertised reach number cannot prove that a cart will reach the required surfaces safely. If the plan depends on a ladder, makeshift platform, unsuitable extension, or awkward body position, stop and reassess the equipment and work method.

Is the job deicing, anti-icing, or both?

Deicing removes frost, snow, slush, or ice that is already on the aircraft. Anti-icing can provide temporary protection to an already clean surface when the aircraft and procedure allow it.

The two jobs may require different fluids and equipment arrangements. A tank, pump, hose, nozzle, heater, or fluid path that fits one job is not automatically suitable for another.

Settle the task and exact fluid before choosing equipment. Ready-to-use and concentrate are not interchangeable, and fluid type or color alone does not tell you what to buy.

How much capacity do you actually need?

Start with a planning period: one aircraft, one event, or one shift. Record the aircraft mix, expected contamination, refill location, refill time, usable inventory, and any actual fluid-use history.

Avoid a generic “aircraft per tank” estimate. Fluid use changes with aircraft size, contamination, weather, procedure, fluid, equipment, and crew technique. A bigger tank can reduce refills, but it also adds weight, storage demand, warm-up demand, and fluid inventory.

The useful question is: Can the planned working quantity support the documented workload and refill plan? If you do not have good records yet, mark that as an open question instead of inventing a number.

What power and heating will the site support?

Power is a site question. Confirm where the equipment will be stored and used, what electrical service is available, and whether engine-powered equipment is a good fit. Think about cords, charging, fuel, ventilation, exhaust, cold starts, and the route to the ramp.

If you need heated fluid, look at the whole setup—not just the heater. Tank size, outdoor storage, available power, hose length, and how quickly you need to be ready all matter.

How do reach and mobility affect the choice?

Reach includes more than hose length. It depends on aircraft shape, cart position, where the operator can stand, hose routing, wind, obstacles, and lighting.

Walk the actual ramp. Measure the route around obstacles, not through them. Check the storage-to-ramp path, doors, gates, turns, grades, snow, ice, and towing or manual-movement limits. A longer hose does not fix an unsafe position or poor access plan.

What support does the equipment need between events?

The cart has to stay ready, not merely work on delivery day. Before buying, decide where the equipment and fluid will be stored, who will look after them, which spare parts to keep, and how spills or repairs will be handled.

Keep damaged equipment or questionable fluid separate until it has been checked.

What seven questions should you take to ADI?

  1. Which aircraft?

    List the makes and models and identify the hardest access problem.

  2. Which task and fluid?

    State whether you need deicing, anti-icing, or both and name the exact fluid under consideration.

  3. What workload?

    Define how many aircraft or events must be supported before a planned refill.

  4. What heat and power?

    Explain what power or fuel is available and how much preparation and recovery time exists.

  5. What reach and mobility?

    Provide measured aircraft, operator-position, hose-route, and storage-to-ramp facts.

  6. Which people?

    Count the trained people available to inspect, operate, communicate, reset, and record the work.

  7. Which facilities?

    Explain where equipment and fluid will be received, stored, protected, maintained, and supported.

  • Who will operate, maintain, refill, and store the equipment?

Should I choose the tank size first?

No. Start with aircraft, task, fluid, workload, refill plan, heat, power, reach, crew, and facilities. Tank size is one result of that review.

How many aircraft can one tank deice?

There is no universal answer. Actual use depends on aircraft, contamination, weather, fluid, equipment, and how the crew works. Past fluid use is the best planning starting point when you have it.

Does a longer hose guarantee that I can reach my aircraft?

No. Reach also depends on aircraft shape, cart position, where the operator can stand, routing, wind, and obstacles. Measure the actual ramp.

Do I need heated equipment?

That depends on the fluid, weather, and how you work. If heat is needed, look at power, tank size, and warm-up time—not only the heater.

Can one cart handle both deicing and anti-icing fluid?

Do not assume so. Pumps, hoses, nozzles, heaters, and cleaning needs can differ. Ask whether a shared setup is practical for your products and process.
