Will a Ground-Based Deicing Cart Reach My Aircraft?

What is the short answer?

Maybe—but hose length or a spray-distance number cannot answer the question alone.

A cart fits when the whole setup works with the real aircraft and ramp: a usable operator position, a practical cart location, a sensible hose route, good footing, and a clear view of the work.

Aircraft shape, snowbanks, other vehicles, wind, and the exact cart, hose, and nozzle can all change the answer. A product photo is not proof of fit.

Why is hose length not the same as aircraft reach?

People often combine three different ideas:

Hose lengthis the amount of hose supplied with or approved for a named configuration. Some length is used by bends, routing, and clearance.

A hose can be long enough to reach an operator while the cart is still poorly placed. A visible farthest droplet can land beyond the part of the spray pattern that is repeatable and useful. Neither fact proves that every required aircraft surface can be reached.

What six questions should you answer before comparing carts?

  1. Which aircraft and configuration are you planning for?

    Record the make, model, and any important configuration differences. Height alone is not enough. Wing depth, fuselage width, tail shape, and blocked lines of sight can change access.

  2. Where can the operator actually work?

    Mark realistic ground-level work zones. Consider snow and ice, slope, lighting, visibility, ramp traffic, fueling activity, runoff controls, and aircraft-movement restrictions. Measure from a usable position—not the closest point someone could squeeze into on a clear summer ramp.

  3. Where can the cart be placed?

    Identify practical cart positions on each side of the aircraft. A position may disappear when snowbanks, service vehicles, cones, drains, doors, or other equipment occupy the ramp. The cart must not become an obstacle or force an unsafe hose route.

  4. What path will the hose follow?

    Trace the full route from the cart or reel to the operator. Include bends and clearance around landing gear, chocks, cones, drains, vehicles, and doors. Do not assume a straight-line measurement represents usable hose.

  5. What obstacles or access limits apply?

    Record anything that removes a cart position, blocks visibility, narrows the work zone, or complicates hose control. Note sensitive areas around the aircraft so the plan does not force awkward or unsafe work.

  6. How will winter weather change the setup?

    Wind can move or break up a spray pattern. Snowbanks can shorten work zones. Ice can affect footing. Cold, darkness, precipitation, and blowing snow can reduce visibility and control. A reach observation from calm, mild conditions does not guarantee the same result in different weather.

Can a ladder or platform solve a reach problem?

Do not use a loose ladder, box, barrel, or makeshift platform to make a poorly matched cart look like it reaches.

If your site truly needs elevated access, treat that as its own decision: purpose-designed equipment, training, and a clear work method. Improvising height is not a substitute for the right cart setup.

How should you confirm a candidate setup?

Start with the worksheet and current product information. If you need more confidence, plan a careful spray test for the exact cart, hose, and nozzle—using a freestanding target, not an aircraft.

Write down the cart setup, operator position, target, and weather. A good result under those conditions does not automatically cover a different aircraft, hose, or winter day.
